ceramic
Ceramic capacitors use ceramic as the dielectric. They can have a large value of capacitance for a small size. There is no polarity with ceramics, this means that it can also be used in AC circuits. Values can be made in a range from 1pF to 100μF. They can be made to operate at DC voltages from 10 – 100 V. Many uses: decoupling, bypassing and blocking.
advantage
They are reliable because they have good frequency response characteristics. Low ESR and ESL. Light. Inexpensive.
disadvantage
A disadvantage is that high-value capacitances are not possible. Suffer from the microphonic effect: mechanical vibrations produce a small voltage in the capacitor.
